Zombies in Diablo I are just like one would expect zombies to be: slow, unintelligent and weak. They are some of the first monsters encountered, some of the easiest monsters to fight, and they disappear shortly after entering the Catacombs.

However, one feature makes one zombie breed exceedingly dangerous. Black Death zombies have the unique ability to permanently drain one hit point on every successful melee attack. Since there is no way of restoring lost hit points in the game, players generally tend to tread very carefully when moving around levels 3-5. Warriors especially are quite vulnerable to this effect and might prefer to use a ranged attack or spell to deal with Black Death's.
