The Halls of Vaught is the final level in Nihlathak's Temple. It is reached from the Halls of Pain and is a preset level with four distinct wings. Its primary attraction is Nihlathak, who must be killed to complete the Betrayal of Harrogath quest and also drops the Key of Destruction in Hell difficulty, which is a reagent for the Pandemonium Event.

There are 4 varieties of the level, each of which features Nihlathak in a different wing. The other three wings also have unique markers at the end: a group of Champion monsters, an Evil Urn, or nothing special. It is simple to tell which wing Nihlathak resides in by taking note of the markers in the other wings. If you proceed down the south wing (which the stairs into the level face), you can judge Nihlathak's location by what you find there:

  • South Wing: Evil Urn
Nihlathak: West Wing
  • South Wing: Champions
Nihlathak: North Wing
  • South Wing: Nothing
Nihlathak: East Wing

The area is named after Fred Vaught, a background designer for Diablo II. It is considered one of the most dangerous areas in the game due not only to Nihlathak's dangerous Corpse Explosion, but also because of the bugged Tomb Vipers which spawn as guest monsters in Hell Difficulty. Their unleashed Poison Clouds and Charge skill are very deadly and can kill even well-geared characters in the blink of an eye.
