Arreat Summit (Diablo II)
The Arreat Summit is the peak of Mt Arreat and the location of both the Ancients and the entrance to the Worldstone Keep. Reaching it requires navigating through numerous frozen tunnels carved long ago into the mountains by the Barbarians.
Before being allowed entrance into the Worldstone Keep, any traveler must first face the Ancients on the Arreat Summit in combat. Only by defeating the three guardians can any adventurer prove their worth and gain entrance. The sole exception to this rule is the Relic of the Ancients, which allows anyone to enter the Keep without facing the Ancients. Because Baal managed to get ahold of that relic from Nihlathak, he was able to pass by the Ancients unharmed, while the player has to battle them in order to pass.
When the Ancients have been summoned, no Town Portals can be opened; if a portal is opened, the Ancients automatically despawn, and the player has to restart the fight. Because of this, and because the ancients are strong monsters in themselves capable to spawning with nasty combinations of abilities in Hell difficulty, they are oftentimes the hardest part of player going through the game in Singleplayer. Since they will not have the aid of powerful friends or rare gear, only themselves and what might have dropped in their own games, facing the Ancients is sometimes nigh impossible. Builds which generally do very well solo, such as a dual element Sorceress, can sometimes find the Ancients impossible to beat.
