The Style Guide describes how the wiki is supposed to look and be formatted. All articles, categories, files and templates must follow the guidelines set forth here. User pages and talk pages do not adhere to it, and while pages in the Help and Diablo Wiki namespaces should follow it as much as possible, they can stray from it for explanatory or technical purposes.

Capital Letters

General

  • Items, monsters, areas, quests etc. are all considered to be names. Abyss Knight should thus have a capital K, as should the Cold Plains, Breath of the Dying and Terror's End and so on.
  • Prepositions are usually not part of a name. Do not write The Dark Wood, but the Dark Wood

Article Names

  • All words in article names are capitalized except for prepositions, except for when the preposition is in fact part of the name.
Incorrect (generic): Fan art
Correct (generic): Fan Art
Incorrect (preposition): Blade Of The Old Religion
Correct (preposition): Blade of the Old Religion
Incorrect (name): the Harrowing
Correct (name): The Harrowing (The Harrowing)

Article Headers

  • Article headers are, just like article names, to be capitalized on each word.

Categories

  • Words in category names are capitalized except for prepositions, except for when the preposition is in fact part of the name.
Incorrect (generic): Category:Unique items
Correct (generic): Category:Unique Items

File Names

  • File names follow the same naming procedures as article names.

Flowing Text

  • Capitals are not to be used in flowing text for emphasis or similar purposes. Use italicized words instead. Bold words can be utilized as well, but should be kept to a minimum.
Incorrect (generic): Gloams are EXTREMELY dangerous
Incorrect (generic): Gloams are Extremely dangerous
Correct (generic): Gloams are extremely dangerous
Correct (generic): Gloams are extremely dangerous

Page Names

When naming any page that is about an item, monster, character, quest, location or other piece of data from the games, the same name used in the games should be used in the wiki. This includes keeping any eventually definitive articles.

Incorrect (generic): Executioner
Correct (generic): The Executioner (The Executioner)

Article Names

  • Page names should be short yet adequately describe what the page contains. They should not be too long (unless necessary) and not contain useless words and prepositions. Do not include underscores, dashes or similar symbols in headers.
Incorrect (generic): List of All Unique Items in Diablo II
Incorrect (generic): List_of_Unique_Items_(Diablo_II)
Accepted (generic): List of Unique Items (Diablo II) (Only to be used if it is in fact a list)
Correct (generic): Unique Items (Diablo II) (The preferred way of naming pages with many different items on them)

Article Headers

  • Like articles, headers should express what the section contains.
  • Headers should not be phrased as questions, imperatives, sentences or other complex structures.

Category Names

  • Categories, unlike articles, must sometimes have quite long and descriptive names to adequately explain what they contain, much more so than article names. They should still avoid entirely unnecessary words however.

File Names

  • Files follow the same naming format that regular articles do.

Naming Conflicts

  • Sometimes there are several pages that could have the same name, only they can't because they articles belong to different games. An example of this is the Monk class.
  • There are three monks in total: one in Diablo III, one in Diablo: Hellfire, and one in Diablo: The Hell. Even though they share the same name, they are distinct classes from very different games, and so cannot be on the same page.
  • The solution is to add a "game suffix" after some of the articles to easily differentiate pages from the Diablo III equivalent.
  • All these pages have a small notice added at the top that shows a viewer where the other articles of the same name are located, or an infobox added to the top.
  • If one article subject is unlikely to be more popular than another, or if there are simply too many pages with similar names, a disambiguation page should be created that links to each of the articles in question.

Linking

  • If another article in the wiki is mentioned, it should be linked to. Links should be used sparingly however.
  • Other articles should only be linked to once per article, unless the article is very long. Multiple links to the same article are not to be used in quick succession.
Correct (generic): Blood Lords first appear in the Crystalline Passage in Diablo II.
Incorrect (generic): Diablo traveled to Lut Gholein after putting Andariel to guard the monastery. Seeking his brother, Diablo went out into the desert in search of Tal Rasha's Tomb. When he came there though, Tyrael was waiting for him, and he almost managed to defeat Diablo had not Marius freed Baal during the fight.

Links in Headers

  • Do not put links in article headers. Both use the same color and the link will not be visible; the header will appear just like normal.

Linking in Hatnotes

Acronyms

  • Acronyms should be kept to a minimum in the wiki, at least in flowing text. In a table or other area of compilation it might be a good idea to use them however due to repetition and/or size constraints. If an acronym is used, it should be a commonly used one, such as FCR for Faster Cast Rate.

References

  • Citations are important when it comes to lore topics or information of dubious nature. References are created by putting them inside <ref></ref> tags at the end of the sentence that you wish to cite.
    • Book citations from one of the Diablo books or Diablo manuals should use Template:Booksource.[1]
    • If a webpage is cited, a link will suffice. This is done by placing the web url inside <ref></ref> tags.[2]
  • You must manually specify where the reference list will appear in the article. This is done by adding <references /> to the article. This should be added at the very bottom right above any navboxes and categories with a header called References above it.
  1. Knaak, Richard A., Scales of the Serpent, page 128.
  2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scales_of_the_serpent

Colors

  • Very many colors have been specified for specific purposes in the wiki, and the same color should always be used for the same purpose.

Usage of Colors

  • Colors are not to be used on flowing text, either for emphasis or other reasons.
  • In templates and tables colors can however be used. This can be to:
    • Show what quality, or kind, an item, monster or similar is of. Such usage of color should always closely represent how the object in question is displayed in-game.
    • Highlight specific parts of templates, such as headers.
    • Clearer structure or better design.
Incorrect (generic): The Paladin's Conviction aura does not reduce poison resistance.
