[] Description

Smite is the only attack in the game that uses the shield as a weapon. As such, it has several special aspects that make it both limited and highly useful depending on the situation.

The minor effects are a few: Smite can apply and , but not or elemental damage like fire etc. It doesn't receive any extra damage from the .

Three aspects are however very important to remembed when using Smite

  • Smite is not affected by , so it never misses its target, regardless of defense and level of the target monster.
  • Smite does not work with Life/Mana steal. This is a major drawback in alter difficulties, as many melee classes rely heavily on life steal to stay alive.
  • Smite can however steal life through .

The last point about Life Tap is very important, since the item grants the attacker a chance to cast Life Tap on each strike. This has made the a very powerful character on , and has made him favored in taking down the three Uber Prime Evils in . Thanks to his attack that never misses and constant life tap with 50% life leech that he can apply, he is capable of taking on the hardest challenge in on his own.

[] Lore

The sword of a Paladin represents the might of righteousness and his shield symbolizes the strength of his faith. Both are tools he uses to mete out justice. Just as righteousness can give his spirit the fortitude to overcome the attacks of the unjust, so too can faith be a weapon to strike back at those who work to defeat him. To this end, the Paladin has developed several combat techniques that use the shield not only for defense, but also as an offensive weapon.
