Duriel, The Lord of Pain, alternatively the Prince of Pain, is one of the Lesser Evils. He appeared as the act boss of Act II in Diablo II where he was killed. He rules of the Realm of Pain in the Burning Hells.

History[]

The Dark Exile[]

Spawned from one of the lesser heads of Tathamet, nothing is known of Duriel prior to the events of the Dark Exile when he aided the other Lesser Evils in the civil war against the Prime Evils. After successfully banishing the Three to Sanctuary, Azmodan secured sovereign rule of Hell for himself and what happened to Duriel is unknown.

Diablo II[]

After Diablo managed to free Baal, the two imprisoned Tyrael, who had tried to stop Diablo, in Tal Rasha's Tomb. They then summoned Duriel to stand guard over Tyrael and to stop any followers from freeing him. Duriel expected the Three to reclaim the rule of Hell with the aid of mankind's innate power, and sought to gain favor with them by aiding them in their journey east.[1] He met his demise at the band of heroes chasing Diablo shortly thereafter.

Current Whereabouts[]

Duriel has likely been banished to the Abyss like the Prime Evils after him. He does not make an appearance in Diablo 3, but he is one of the Great Evils who are sealed inside the Black Soulstone, used to subsequently reform Diablo as the Prime Evil.

Physical Appearance[]

Duriel is a large demon with the lower body of a maggot and a humanoid upper body, but with two large blades in place of his hands. A giant horn protrudes from his forehead, and his mouth is filled with sharp teeth and framed by what appears to be two mandibles.

Power and Abilities[]

The Lord of Pain revels in physical harm and the effects they create. For Duriel to be satisfied, his victims must let him know they are in pain, and as such he screams and spasms of torment. His wish for pain is so great that, if presented with no other options, he willingly inflicts it upon himself to sate his desire.[2]
